Water and bread for 500 million people by Easter 2033

100 regions, five years per project, independently measured: this is how MISSION 2033 works.

The need

Half a billion people without secure water and bread

The number of hungry people is no longer falling. Wars, droughts and the blockades of fertiliser and grain – in 2026 in the Black Sea and the Strait of Hormuz – hit the poorest first.

Our answer

Create water where it is missing – and turn it into bread

Where the rain fails, even the best seed is no help. That is why MISSION 2033 starts with water: additional rain fills soils, wells and reservoirs. Farming, water distribution and health build on it.

The goal is not permanent aid but self-reliance. After five years a region feeds itself – and sells its surplus.

The Earth seen from space
How it works

One model for 100 regions

Each project runs for five years and reaches an average of 5 million people across some 5,000 km².

Select the region

According to need: drought, hunger, fires. Together with the government, the bishops’ conference and local aid organisations.

Deploy the technology

More rain and snow, protection from fires and floods, clean air – free of chemicals and regional.

Water becomes bread

Farming, water distribution, health: programmes with aid organisations and communities.

The country takes over

MISSION 2033 finances year 1, the country carries years 2 to 5. The impact is measured independently.

Year 1 · MISSION 2033
Years 2–5 · the country served  ·  around €6 bn in total, of which around €1 bn private

Private: around €1 bn

Donations, members, foundations, parishes, companies and main sponsors finance the first year of every project.

Countries: around €5 bn

The countries served take over years 2 to 5 – from their own funds and with their development partners.

€2.40 per person per year

That is all it costs to give one person water and food security – calculated across all projects up to 2033.

The path to the goal

How we reach 500 million people by Easter 2033

From 2027 new projects start every year; from 2031 all 100 are running. Half of the people are lifted out of acute need, the other half are protected from falling into it.

Bar chart: people with water and food security grow from 50 million in 2027 to 500 million at Easter 2033

Half lifted out of acute need, half protected from hunger. Goal and plan of MISSION 2033.

Need falls instead of rising

Line chart: without change acute need rises to 508 million; with MISSION 2033 it falls to around 258 million

Around 250 million fewer people in acute need at Easter 2033. Scenario based on WFP data 2026.

Every euro works twelve times over

Bar chart: annual costs and benefits; benefits around twelve times the costs

Around USD 71 bn in benefits for USD 6 bn in costs, 2027–2033: farming, water, jobs, health, exports.

Impact

What a benefit of 12 : 1 means

More water has an effect far beyond the field. The calculation is based on indicators from FAO, ICARDA, IFPRI, the World Bank, WHO and WFP.

  • Farming: around 40% higher yields in the project regions.
  • Water: drinking water, wells and reservoirs fill up again.
  • Jobs: procurement, construction and operation create local employment.
  • Health: less malnutrition, fewer diseases caused by polluted water.
  • Exports: surpluses are sold – recipients become suppliers.
Frequently asked questions

Questions and answers

Why Easter 2033?

Easter 2033 marks the 2000th anniversary of the Resurrection of Christ. MISSION 2033 wants to set a sign for that day that reaches all people: water and bread for half a billion people.

Who is behind MISSION 2033?

MISSION 2033 is the main project of the Davos Faith Circle, an association based in Davos. It grew out of a discussion circle that has met during the World Economic Forum since 2011. The association is independent of the World Economic Forum.

Where does my money go?

Donations go to the projects of MISSION 2033 – to the work of local aid organisations and to the technologies deployed – and not to any single company. Only a small share is used to run the association. All impact is measured independently and published.

Is this changing the weather?

The technology used reinforces a natural process: it helps existing clouds form rain. It works from the ground, without aircraft and without chemicals, and has a regionally limited effect. Every deployment is accompanied by measurement data.

Why does MISSION 2033 matter for Europe too?

Hunger and water shortages force people to flee. Easing need in the regions they come from – in Africa, the Mediterranean and Southern and Eastern Europe – strengthens peace and relieves the countries of the North.
