MISSION 2033 › Peace & Migration

Where there is water and bread, peace grows

Hunger drives people into conflict and flight. MISSION 2033 tackles the roots – so that people can stay in their homeland.

Hunger and war

Hunger is both a consequence and a cause of conflict

War and conflict are today the biggest cause of acute hunger: 147 million people are in need because of them. Conversely, new conflicts flare up wherever water and land become scarce.

Pope Leo XIV calls the use of hunger as a weapon a cruel strategy. MISSION 2033 sets the opposite against it: water and bread as instruments of peace.

Building peace

Three ways MISSION 2033 creates peace

No more fighting over water

Additional water does not redistribute scarcity – it ends it. That takes the ground away from conflicts between communities, regions and states.

Peace between religions

Christians, Jews and Muslims carry MISSION 2033 together. The rain falls on everyone – rich and poor, of every origin and every faith.

Able to stay instead of having to flee

Those who have water and work at home do not have to leave. MISSION 2033 reduces flight and migration at their root.

Migration

An answer to one of Europe’s greatest concerns

More than 100 million people worldwide have been forced to flee. Most stay in their region, but many set off north because their fields are drying up and their families are going hungry.

Migration and its consequences weigh on the countries of the North. Nationalist forces exploit tensions such as the unrest in France and Italy in autumn 2026 – and peaceful coexistence between peoples suffers.

Tackling need at its roots also protects cohesion in Europe.

What MISSION 2033 actually does

  • Secures water and harvests in the regions people come from – in Africa, the Mediterranean and Latin America.
  • Fights drought and water shortages in Southern and Eastern Europe too.
  • Creates local jobs – in farming, construction, operation and processing.
  • Gives young people a future in their homeland.
  • Works in partnership with the governments, churches and aid organisations of each country.
Pope Francis, FAO, 16 October 2017It’s clear that wars and climate change cause hunger; let us stop presenting it as an incurable illness. On the same day: “The relation between hunger and migrations can only be faced if we go to the roots of the problem.”
Pope John Paul II, World Day of Peace 1990World peace is threatened not only by the arms race, regional conflicts and continued injustices among peoples and nations, but also by a lack of due respect for nature.Message “Peace with God the Creator, peace with all of creation”
